Benjamin Odell 9/20/10 English 102 Randi vaughn Rhetorical Analysis In her essay. Disconnected, lynda, smith makes the point that technology that claims to bring people together is actually doing just the opposite, driving them apart, but her argument is ineffective because she fails to provide concrete evidence of her claim. Very early in the essay she claims she is a technophobe, which only reduces her credibility on the topic. She then continues on with an altogether weak argument on the failures of technology in the world around. She spends a large portion of the essay speaking from firsthand experience about how technology is made appealing to us through use of advertisement and other techniques, and then"s statistics, but fails to show how these statistics assist her argument. She paints technologic advances are something to be feared, and that the machines are slowly taking over from the inside. She repeatedly makes the point that technology isnt something we actually want but that we have been brainwashed by media and advertising. She paints the telecommunications industry as sinister overlords plotting to control you through technology. She repeats her description of their advertising techniques bombarding us with flashy colors and images ad nauseam.

Yet Owen had the gas as if it was the sea. Owen emulated the gas into liquid because it seemed like the soldier was drowning. This is very effective because you don t happen to see in everyday life adults a person drowning in gas. It makes the whole thing unusual, but fearful. The second line in the third stanza is probably one of the most powerful sentence in the entire poem. Noticing the three -ings at the end of the last three words, it is very effective especially at fear. Plunges is also effective.
It gives you the idea of the soldier leaping at you for. The rest of the paper is available free of charge to our registered users. The registration process just couldn't be easier. Log in or register now. It is all free! You may also find These documents Helpful.
Owen had the shell feel disappointed and outrun by those soldiers. All this gives you a petrifying and horrendous image in your mind and would think what would happen to the soldiers if they didn t run fast enough. In the first line of the second stanza i noticed that the first gas! Was in lower case then gas! Came in the second one. I assumed Owen did this because he was writing in this part about a soldier spotted a faint green gas coming out of the shell that just hit the ground.
Therefore he at first mumbles the word gas, then realising nobody knows, he shouts gas! Ecstasy of fumbling in the second line signifies the soldiers quickly and clumsily putting their gas masks. The tone and mood in these lines, i noticed, are very tensioned and quick. What I mean by quick is that everything seems to be moving very fast. Ecstasy of fumbling and Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time gives you a rapid response to what is happening. The next four lines are very unexpected. Owen suddenly tells us that there was a soldier who failed to put his mask on and is floundering about, as if he was on fire. In the clouds of gas like the sea, owen explains that the unfortunate soldier is drowning. Now drowning only occurs in water, you couldn t drown in gas.

The last line of the first stanza talks about Tired and outstripped five-nines. Five-nines is obviously a type of shell since it dropped behind the soldiers. In my opinion Owen used this because firstly it is to about have the rhythm in a 2 by 2 pattern (i.e. Ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum) and having a more specific term than just using the word shells which sounds bold. Shells, as we all know, are dead. They do not have any feelings, emotions or responses. Yet Owen wrote them in his poem as tired, outstripped and disappointed. Owen used personification to describe the incident when the soldiers were running along when suddenly a shell just dropped at the path they just ran through.
Line five, six and seven of the first stanza describes the soldiers conditions in a resume more detailed form. Owen used neology for the first time in this poem. Blood-shod is a new word that means bloody feet. Many soldiers lost their boots while escaping from the battlefield and so had to retreat barefooted. This gives the readers a revolting and depressing feeling. An odd thing about line seven is that Owen wrote Drunk with fatigue for describing the soldiers. Personally, i think that Owen is trying to say is that the soldiers appearance looks as if they are drunk due to the fact that they are swinging their arms and limping.
shells. Owen writes the soldiers heading back to safety where the word rest tells us that in the next line. The first two lines of the poem describes the conditions of the retreating soldiers. The expression dealt with their reminds me of old and powerless people wobbling back to their shelter. Bent-double portrays the soldiers current position, bent down facing the ground. Owen said this because the soldiers were ducking so they aren t as visible to the enemies. This also gives Owen the idea of beggars since they are always facing down because of shame and misery.
Dulce et Decorum Est is one of the most powerful poems ever expressed. The tone of voice and imagery created in your mind, the tension you feel when you read through parts it, they all make you feel as if you are actually in the poem. The tone of the poem seems to be very antagonistic and bitter.Knock kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge. Is an example of aggressive tone and bitterness. It gives you an idea about the soldiers going barmy on the mud they have to trudge through. Irritated that there is so much filth that it s making them difficult to move. Sludge and Trudge gives you a heavy feeling.
